Why we suggest this tour itinerary?

In this Itinerary, tourists will visit Nanjing, a city around 300km to the northwest of Shanghai, situated in the heartland of lower Yangtze River region, which has long been a major centre of culture, education, research, politics, economy, transport networks and tourism in the south of China. Nanjing has served as the capital of various Chinese dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments dating from 229 AD (for the state of Eastern Wu) to 1949 (for Republic of China). In history, Nanjing has protected Han Chinese Race and Culture for many times. When the northern and central China were occupied and destroyed by nomadic peoples, Han Chinese was in the catastrophes, Han Chinese always chose Nanjing as the capital and the renaissance base, because nomadic people are quite unfit the water terrain and hot atmosphere in this region.

Originally there are traditionally 4 historical capitals of China, collectively referred to as the "Four Great Ancient Capitals of China". The four are Beijing, Nanjing, Luoyang and Xian (Changan) which were the capital of the whole China at various periods. In a sense, they represent the peak of the achievement of ancient Chinese culture.

Day 1
Shanghai-Nanjing by Bullet Train, Tour in Nanjing
Dining:Do not include in the quotation
Accommodation:Overnight in Nanjing

In the morning, you will make your own way to the railway station in Shanghai by yourselves, taking the bullet train from Shanghai to Nanjing (around 2 hours on the way). Your guide will also take this train with you to Nanjing. Upon your arrival at Nanjing, your guide will help you to meet your local driver, transfer to the east of downtown Nanjing to visit to Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and  Mingxiao Mausoleum (UNESCO World Heritage), both of them are at the Purple Gold Mountain to the east of Nanjing.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen was born in Guangdong Province on 12 November 1866, and died in 1925 in Beijing. On 1 June 1929, Dr. Sun was buried there. Sun, considered to be the "Father of Modern China" both in mainland China and in Taiwan, fought against the imperial Qing government and after the 1911 revolution, ended the monarchy and founded the Republic of China, the first democratic country in Asia.

Mingxiao Mausoleum is the tomb for the founder of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). It lies at the southern foot of Purple Mountain, located east of the historical centre of Nanjing. The construction of the mausoleum is from 1381 and ended in 1405. The original wall of the mausoleum was more than 22.5 kilometres long.

The winding Sacred Way (Shendao) to the tomb is an 1800-metre-long road. It includes several sections: the Elephant Road and the Wengzhong Road. The Elephant Road is lined by 12 pairs of 6 kinds of animals (lions, xiezhi, camels, elephants, qilin, and horses), guarding the tomb. Beyond them is a column called huabiao in Chinese. One then continues along the Wengzhong Road. Four pairs of ministers and generals (or warrior guardian figures, wengzhong) of stone have been standing there for centuries to guard the journey to the after life.

Afterwards, drive to Qinhuai River area in the south part of downtown Nanjing to enjoy its famous charming night view.

Tour in Nanjing, Nanjing-Shanghai by Bullet Train
Dining:Do not include in the quotation

Today in the morning, you will visit the Old President Office (or called Presidential Palace, used before 1949, during the Republic of China era).

The nest attraction you will visit today is the Zhonghua Gate, the southern city gate and defensive complex on the city wall of Nanjing. The city wall of Nanjing was built from 1360 to 1386 under the founder of the Ming dynasty. At that time, Nanjing was the capital of whole China. The city wall was 33.676 kilometres long, 14–21 m high, 14.5m thick at its base, and 4.9m thick at the top. Thirteen gates were built into the wall, and the enclosed area was the largest of any walled city in China.

Afterwards, you will visit Changganli, a well-protected old Nanjing area with many old residence buildings and stores, which is located by the side of city wall and is the root of Nanjing city in its history.

The last place you will explore is Confucius Temple, South China Imperial Examination Hall and Qinhuai River area which you have already enjoy its night charm yesterday.

Confucius Temple and Qinhuai River

As the “Mother River” of Nanjing, the Qinhuai River is the cradle giving birth to ancient culture of Jinling (Nanjing). Extending five kilometers in total, the inner Qinhuai River has been historically known as “Five-kilometer Qinhuai” as the cream of Qinhuai scenic area. It is an AAAAA national tourist area integrating natural sceneries, landscape, gardens, temples, shools, streets, civil residences as well as local customs. In ancient China, only the person who can pass the Imperial Examination can have the right to be the officials. So this examination is very important. Imperial Examination buidlings, first built in Southern Song Dynasty(1169) here, is located in the east of Confucius Temple as a part. It was the country’s examination center at that time. When it came to Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it possessed a vast area of over 20 thousand dormitories and a hundred offices. Its large-scale and vast occupying area enables it to be the largest examination site except Beijing. but now only the main part of it still exists here.
