Why we suggest this tour itinerary?

In this Itinerary, tourists will visit 5 famous cities in Henan Province (the Central Plains of China) – Luoyang, Dengfeng, Zhengzhou, Kaifeng and Anyang. Except Dengfeng, the spiritual "centre of heaven and earth", other 4 cities are among 8 historical capitals of China.

Originally there are traditionally four historical capitals of China, collectively referred to as the "Four Great Ancient Capitals of China". The four are Beijing, Nanjing, Luoyang and Xian (Changan) which were the capital of the whole China at various periods. In a sense, they represent the peak of the achievement of ancient Chinese culture. As more new archaeological evidence began to be uncovered since the 1930s, other historical capitals have been included in the list. The phrase "Seven Ancient Capitals of China" now includes – in addition to the earlier four – Kaifeng (added in the 1920s), Hangzhou (added in the 1930s), and Anyang (added after 1988). In 2004, the China Ancient Capital Society officially included Zhengzhou as the eighth historical capital in light of new archaeological findings dating from the early Shang dynasty.

Some info about the 5 Cities you will visit in this Itinerary:

Luoyang:

With over 5000 years civilization history, 4000 years city history, and among this 4000 years, there are around 1500 years Chinese capital history - the earliest capital for whole China, the longest and most dynasties capital of China (totally 13 dynasties capital for whole or part of China and 105 emperors stayed here), Luoyang is one of the origin of the Chinese Civilization. The greater Luoyang area has been sacred ground since the late Neolithic period. This area at the intersection of the Luo River and Yi River was considered to be the geographical center of China, and the center is the most important origin of the Chinese Civilization. Hence the name China (means Middle Kingdom in Mandarin) firstly means this area. Because of this sacred aspect, several cities – all of which are generally referred to as "Luoyang" – have been built in this area. In 2070 BC, the king of Xia Dynasty, Tai Kang, moved its capital here and began its city and capital history. Along with Xi’an city, Luoyang is also the east starting point of the Silk Road.

Dengfeng is located at the foot of the Mount Song, one of the most sacred mountains in China. According to history chronicles, over 4000 year ago, Yu, the first emperor of Xia Dynasty (the first dynasty in Chinese history), once made his capital here. The city is one of the most renowned spiritual centres of China, home to various religious institutions and temples, such as the Taoist Zhongyue Temple, the Buddhist Shaolin Temple, as well as the Confucian Songyang Academy, hence its poetic expression derived from Chinese literature as the spiritual "centre of heaven and earth". Shaolin Temple is one of the cradles of Chinese Kung fu and the origin of Chan (Zen) Sect of Buddhism - the most influential sect of Buddhism in China which is still with the great impact on peoples lives both in ancient times and the present day.

Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan Province now. When Shang Dynasty, the 2nd dynasty in Chinese history, was established around 3600 years ago (in 1559 BC), Bodu in the current Zhengzhou city area became its capital for 10 emperors. Now the 7 km long Shang Dynasty Bodu city wall still exists in downtown Zhengzhou.

Kaifeng is also one of the 8 Most Important Ancient Capitals in China. There have been many reconstructions during its history. In 364 BC during the Warring States period, the State of Wei founded a city called Daliang in the current Kaifeng city area as its capital. During the North Song Dynasty (960—1127 AD), Kaifeng was the capital of total China, with a population of over 400,000 living both inside and outside the city wall.

The archaeological site of Yin Xu, in the current Anyang City, some 200 km north of Zhengzhou city, is an ancient capital city of the late Shang Dynasty (1300 - 1046 BC). At the beginning of the 14th century BCE, King Pangeng of the Shang Dynasty moved his capital to the site of an old village in the current Anyang city area which had existed since 5,000 BCE, upon the banks of the Huan River. The new city was named "Yin". It testifies to the golden age of early Chinese culture, crafts and sciences, a time of great prosperity of the Chinese Bronze Age. A number of royal tombs and palaces, prototypes of later Chinese architecture, have been unearthed on the site, including the Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area, with more than 80 house foundations, and the only tomb of a member of the royal family of the Shang Dynasty to have remained intact, the Tomb of Fu Hao. Fuhao is one of the reigning wives of King Wu Ding who continued to use Yin as his capital and launched numerous military campaigns from this base (many led by Fu Hao, who was both a general and a high priestess) against surrounding tribes thus securing Shang rule and raising the dynasty to its historical zenith. The large number and superb craftsmanship of the burial accessories found there bear testimony to the advanced level of Shang crafts industry. Inscriptions on oracle bones found in Yin Xu bear invaluable testimony to the development of one of the world’s oldest writing systems, ancient beliefs and social systems.

Day 3
Tour in Dengfeng, Dengfeng -Zhengzhou by Car
Dining:Not included in the quotation
Accommodation:In Zhengzhou

You will start your tour in Dengfeng with the visit to Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Zen Sect of Buddhism and Chinese Martial Art – Kung Fu. The temple was firstly built in 477 AD and the first abbot is Batuo, (also, Fotuo or Bhadra - the Chinese transposition of Buddha), an Indian dhyana master who came to China in AD 464 to spread Buddhist teachings. In 527, an Indian monk, Bodhidarma (known to the Chinese as Da Mo), founded the Mahayana Sect of Buddhism, which is known as Chen (or Zen). He stayed there till his death in 535, and the temple has become the centre of Chinese Buddhism. It is said that Da Mo, seeing monks becoming fat and lazy from long hours sitting in meditation, came up with the idea of walking meditation, which imitated the natural motions of animals and birds. Eventually, the imitation evolved into a form of unarmed combat or martial arts, which is known as Kungfu.

In another part of the temple, you can see the unique "Forest of Dagodas" (Pagoda Forest), with its 243 stupas or dagoaas each containing the remains of an abbot from the Shaolin Monastery. They were built of either stone or brick. The first stupa at this site was built in 791 and the last in 1803. They range from seven stories (14.6 metres) to just a metre in height with many different styles. Against the deep and far mountains, this forest looks more like a holy place.

In the afternoon, you will visit Zhong Yue Temple (ancient Taoist temple for Sacred Central Mountain in China - Mt. Songshan)

and Songyang Academy (One of the most famous ancient classical learning Academies in China).

After Dinner, drive for around 76km/1.5 hours to Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, and overnight in Zhengzhou.

Day 4
One Day Tour to Kaifeng from Zhengzhou

Today firstly you will enjoy the out view of the Ancient City Wall which is 14.4km long and reconstructed in 1841. With over 14 sq. km area inside the city wall, it is only less than Beijing and Nanjing in China as the city wall built in Ming and Qing Dynasty. Afterwards you will visit the Taoist Yanqin Temple which was firstly built in 1233 and rebuilt and renovated several times through the ages, but its location and base has never changed,

and the Dragon Pavilion which was one of the buildings of the North Song imperial palace(960-1279 AD). It was destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout its long history. The current design was first built in the middle of the Qing dynasty (around 250 years ago) on the foundations of the old Song imperial palace. Then walking on the Imperial Street to feel the historical atmosphere in Song Dynasty around 1000 years ago.

Later you will get to the biggest, oldest and best preserved glazed Pagoda in China - the Iron Pagoda. This octagonal-base structure was built in 1049 and 56.88 m high, with a total of 13 stories. The pagoda is so-named not because it is made of iron, but because its color resembles that of iron. It has survived the vicissitudes of war and floods to become the oldest landmark in this ancient city. The exterior features more than fifty different varieties of glazed brick and 1,600 intricate and richly detailed carvings, including those of standing and sitting Buddha, standing monks, singers and flying dancers, flowers, lions, dragons and other legendary beasts as well as many fine engravings. Under the eaves are 104 bells that ring in the wind.

The tour in Kaifeng will be completed with the visit to Yuwang Platform and Po Pagoda. Inside an typical classical Chinese garden style park, Yuwang Platform is a large graceful Chinese palace style architecture complex to commemorate the heroes of flood control in ancient China. Because Kaifeng city was destroyed many times by the terrible flood from Yellow River, the people here hope these heroes can protect this area. Po Pagoda was built in 974 but partially destroyed. It is a typical pagoda on the transformation from quadrangle shape to octagonal shape. It is a treasure house for the calligraphy arts. There are over 200 steles in the pagoda and among it, 178 steles are the Buddhist sutra steles made in Song Dynasty (960-1127).

It was during this captivity that he was said to have constructed the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching which was derived from an initial set of eight trigrams (The 8 trigrams were created by the legendary humane ancestor and world ruler Fu Xi who lived in the middle Palaeolithic age.) Here you can also find 7m thick cultural layers with the clear vestige and remains of Longshan Culture and Shang Zhou Culture. After around 1 hour’s sightseeing at the Lane City, you will hop aboard your van and drive north to Anyang city (20km/40m) to visit the famous UNESCO World Heritage - The Museum of Yin Ruins (Or translated as Anyang Yin Xu Museum). You will feast your eye on the exquisite collections unearthed in Yin, the capital (1300–1045 BC) of the Shang (Yin) Dynasty here and appreciate the foundation sites of the emperor’s palaces, royal temples and the capital layout design around 3300 years ago, especially the only one remained intact Tomb of Fu Hao. Fuhao is one of the reigning wives of King Wu Ding whose reign lasted from approximately 1250 to 1192 BC and continued to use Yin (current Anyang area) as his capital and launched numerous military campaigns from this base (many led by Fu Hao, who was both a general and a high priestess) against surrounding tribes thus securing Shang rule and raising the dynasty to its historical zenith.

Afterwards you will get to Ma’s Manor the No.1 Manor in the Central Plains of China. It covers an area of 20,000 sq. m. and built between 1880 and 1924.
