      Ancient Suzhou City:

Suzhou, "The City of Classical Gardens", is an elegant and charming ancient city only around 90km to the west of Shanghai center Suzhous classical gardens occupy an unique and irreplaceable position in the history of world landscape gardening. Do not like the western garden arts which is in pursuit of the artificial beauty, Chinese gardens focus on the natural beauty. As the traditional retreat of scholars and gentleman, the classical Chinese garden provided a place not only to meditate, but also to socialize, play music, indulge in the calligraphic arts, painting, writing, eating, drinking, and playing games. The beauty of classical Chinese garden and architecture lies in its knowledge about the world, its combination of aesthetic theory and architecture practice, and its containment and demonstration of the philosophy of ancient China.

Now in Suzhou, there are 4 most famous classical gardens: The Surging Waves Pavilion - representing the garden style in Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), Lion Forest Garden - representing the garden style in Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368 AD), Humble Administrators Garden - representing the garden style in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD), Lingering Garden - representing the garden style of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD). The ancient gardens in Suzhou mainly were the private gardens belonging to the wealthy magnates in old times. Master of Nets Garden is the best complex wholly remaining it residential part and garden area, although it is one of the smallest one, it is also one of the finest one. All of the gardens mentioned above are in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In this one day itinerary, tourists will visit one of them: Humble Administrators Garden - the large and best one of the Suzhou style garden, and Tiger Hill, the landmark of ancient Suzhou with over 2500 years hsitory, and Suzhou Museum where tourist will know more about the life, culture and history of Suzhou. Beyond that, tourist will also visit the Chinese Classical Garden Museum by the side of Humble Administrators Garden and enjoy a typical Suzhou cuisine lunch in the well protected old Pingjiang Street by the side of Pingjiang River inside the well protected ancient Suzhou area in central Suzhou.

      More info about Suzhou city:

The ancient city of Suzhou occupies an area of 14.2 square kilometers, and the city was built as the capital city of the Wu Kingdom in 514 BC by Wu Zixu, the primary mister of the kingdom by the order of King Helu. Hence the name of "Great City of Helu", the ancient name for Suzhou. With a history of more than 2,500 years, the city (old city with around 14 square meters) still stands at its original site when it was established around 2500 years ago! The two moats inside and outside the city wall and the city gates of Chang, Qi, Lou, Xiang, Pan and Xu remain basically unchanged. Suzhou is the only one ancient city in the world which never moved its location for over 2500 years. According to the inscribed stone "Pingjiang Map" in the second year of the Shaoding reign of the Southern Song Dynasty (1229), there were seven north-south rivers and 14 east-west rivers inside the city of Suzhou, totaling 82 kilometers, and 314 bridges. InSuzhoutoday, there are still 35 kilometers of rivers and more than 160 bridges.

The layout of the ancient city of Suzhouwas in the form of double chessboards, that is, rivers and streets run parallel to each other. The river and streets were intermingled, and the waterfront houses varied in height, together representing a rich flavor of water town. There are numerous cultural heritages such as ancient pagodas and temples, government offices, former residences of celebrities, gardens and mansions, ancestral temples, halls and public places, archways and ancient wells in the city.

The ancient city of Suzhou has rich cultural heritages. There are now 47 historical and cultural areas and 126 historic sites under protection, including 11 under national protection, 30 at provincial level and 85 at municipal level. In addition, there are also many under controlled protection: 200 buildings, 22 sections of ancient revetments, 22 ancient archways, 70 ancient bridges, 37 gate towers with brick carvings, and 639 ancient wells. Of these cultural heritages, eight classical gardens have already been inscribed in the World Heritage List. The historical and cultural street blocks of Pingjiang, the Humble Administrators Garden and Shantang, as typical areas of the ancient city of Suzhou, will apply for being inscribed in the World Heritage List. Now in Suzhou , totally there are still 69 ancient classical gardens with hundreds of years history.

Situated at the temperate zone and with subtropical oceanic monsoon climate, Suzhou enjoys four distinct seasons, a mild temperature and abundant rainfall. The city spreads on a low terrain, with the plain covering 55% of the total area. With a network of rivers and canals as well as a fertile land, the city is rich in a variety of agricultural products. Major crops vary from rice to wheat, rape, cotton, mulberry, and fruit. Its specialties include Biluochun(Green Spiral Spring) Tea, Dao Fish from Yangtze River, Silver Fish from TaihuLakeand Hairy Crabs fromYangchenhuLake. As a well-known "Land of Fish and Rice" as well as a "Silk Capital",Suzhouenjoys a fame of "Paradise on Earth".

      Wuzheng Ancient Town:
In the south of the Yangtze River Delta, there are many ancient water towns like Wuzhen. They have in common ancient bridges, streets, lanes and delicately decorated residences, but Wuzhen, an ancient water town only 130 KM to the west of Shanghai center, seems to contain richer historical and cultural flavors, maybe because it boasts the best conservation project among all of the ancient towns in Yangtze River Delta, most venerated history and least modern influences. Now it is commonly known that Wuzhen is the best preserved water town in China. When the local people opened the ancient riverine town of Wuzhen to visitors in early 2001, they were determined to avoid the tacky mix of tourist restaurants and souvenir shops that has swamped other nearby water towns. Wuzhen has been preserved rather than restored, lovingly kept rather than tarted up, and its ancient ways of life maintained. Most of all, Wuzhen is still a living town, where daily life goes on seemingly unimpeded by a growing trickle of visitors.

Wuzhen, a town with a history of 1200 years, is only around 2 hours drive from Shanghai. It is divided in two parts of touristic interest: Xizha (West Wuzhen) and Dongzha (East Wuzhen).  Xizha has a special charm, it is renovated with the investment of around 1 Billion Chinese dollar.  Now The ancient Xizha Street is one of the best-kept architectures of Ming and Qing dynasties in China. There are residential area, workshop area, culture area, ancient college, temples and Pagoda, gardens, bridges, dining area, shopping area, all of these feature local traditions and customs.  The night view in Xizha (West Part of Wuzhen) boasts one of the best night view sceneries in China – it is the fairyland you never dreamed.

      Hangzhou

Hangzhou, "a Paradise City for Tourists", is located only around 200 kilometers southwest of Shanghai and at the southern end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (the longest and oldest canal in the world). It is one of Seven Ancient National Capitals in China and one of the Must Visit Cities for foreign tourists to China. Now it is the capital of Zhejiang Province in East China. It is very famous for its picturesque West Lake (the UNESCO World Heritage). It also boasts the Buddhist sacred land of China and the home of Chinese tea and silk culture. Unavoidably, Hangzhou is also an important city for elite culture. Centering on West Lake, a large number of top scenic spots and cultural heritage sites represent the best aspect of tourism in Hangzhou. In China, Hangzhou is commonly known as "the Paradise on Earth".

The West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou, comprising the West Lake and the hills surrounding its three sides, has inspired famous poets, scholars and artists since the 9th century. It comprises numerous temples, pagodas, pavilions, gardens and ornamental trees, as well as causeways and artificial islands.

These additions have been made to improve the landscape west of the city of Hangzhou to the south of the Yangtze River.

The West Lake has influenced garden design in the rest of China as well as Japan and Korea over the centuries and bears an exceptional testimony to the cultural tradition of improving landscapes to create a series of vistas reflecting an idealized fusion between humans and nature.

Although there are dozens of other sites known as West Lake, the West Lake in Hangzhou is the most famous west lake in China. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides.. Gu Shan (Solitary Hill) is the largest natural island in the lake. Meanwhile Three Pools Mirroring Moon is the largest artificial island. The Su & Bai Causeways run across the lake. Three small man-made islands, Three Pools Mirroring Moon or Xiaoyingzhou (Little Fairyland), Huxinting (Middle Lake Pavilion), and Ruangongdun (Mr. Ruans Mound) lie in the center of West Lake.  West Lake is not only famous for its picturesque landscape, it is also associated with many scholars, national heroes, and martyrs of the Communist Revolution, thus embracing many aspects of Chinese culture. In addition, many ancient buildings, stone caves and engraved tablets in surrounding areas are among the most cherished national treasures of China, with significant artistic value.

      West Lake Dragon Well Tea

Hangzhou is one of the birthplaces of Chinese green tea. The tea grows here is named Xihu Longjing Tea - West Lake Dragon Well Tea. This Tea is listed among the top 10 types of green tea in China. But where exactly is this tea grown? The sought-after tea is actually grown in villages in the deep mountains where are a little far from the lake. According to one government report, the area contains 95,500 mu (or 63 sq. km) of land with crops grown on it, a portion of that being tea.

The Longjing portion of the name means "Dragon Well" and refers to an actual well to the west of West Lake near a small village called Longjing. This picturesque village runs on an economy consisting of tourism and tea. You can walk the streets in Longjing and smell the aroma of freshly-picked tea leaves being pan-fired, sometimes right on the sidewalk. You can get into the village through the charming 9 Streams and 18 Gullies.

      More Info about Hangzhou:

When Marco Polo came to Hangzhou in the 13th century, he declared it to be “the most beautiful and elegant city in the world". There is a popular saying: "Above there is heaven, below there are Hangzhou and Suzhou." Hangzhous "heavenly" beauty attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to its exquisite West Lake (Xi Hu) area each year to enjoy the placid lake, beautiful gardens, reflecting pools, lavish temples and lakeside teahouses.

Hangzhou began to prosper and flourish in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It was the capital of the Wu and Yue States in the 10th Century during the Five Dynasties Period, and had its political heyday in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), when it served as the capital of China. Hangzhou witnessed a commercial boom in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties, which is continuing at present.

There are many well-known historical and cultural sites in the areas around West Lake. Examples are the Lingyin Temple and Six Harmonies Pagoda. Hangzhou is also well known for its silk and tea. A trip to Hangzhou can be easily combined with a visit to a tea plantation in the hills near the West Lake.

Hangzhou West Lake Cultural Landscape was listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 24, 2011 during the the 35th World Heritage Conference held in Paris.
