Located to the northwest of Ningbo city, by the side of Baiyang Lake and Wulei Mountain and in the typical ancient Yangtze River Delta water town style, this ancient town was established in Tang Dynasty, around 1200 years ago. Unlike some other ancient towns, this serene town is not very commercial, many local people still stay in it and enjoy the slow pace life of their own. A limpid little river gently flows from west to east in the middle of the town and 7 ancient bridges built in Ming Dynasty are over this charming river. There are many splendid ancient residence buildings in the town, include Yes Family House (also called "24 Rooms") and Shens Family House which can be visited by tourists. Originally built in 282 AD, with a history of more than 1700 years and contains 600 rooms covering about 80,000 s m, located about 20 km to the southeast of Ningbo proper, this Temple takes its name from a 3rd century B.C. Indian emperor who, after conquering most of what is India today, renounced violence and embraced Buddhism. Now It is the only existing temple which is named after the Indian King Asoka within China. This temple has been one of the holiest Buddhist temples in China since the Song Dynasty (around 1000 years ago) and well known for the role it played in the popularity of Buddhism in East Asia.

For believers, the temple is important for its stupa housing the sarira of the historical Buddha. It is said after his body was cremated, colorful beads, called sarira, were found among the bone ashes, and were later placed in stupas by King Asoka. According to legend, one of these siriras was found by Chinese monk Liu Sahe when a small stupa miraculously appeared before him with a sirira from Buddhas head inside.

The famous sariras are stored in the seven story stone pagoda rising from the golden-glazed tile roof covered Buddha Relic Hall.
